Holiday Homes Lake Tekapo

At the heart of New Zealand’s scenic South Island, on the main South Island tourist route, nestled beside a shimmering turquoise lake and surrounded by snow capped peaks, Lake Tekapo is the number one tourist and holiday-makers destination in the Mackenzie basin, just two and a half hours drive from the international gateway city of Christchurch.

The Alpine village of Lake Tekapo has enjoyed phenomenal growth in tourist facilities and services in recent years with the construction of international 5 star hotel and managed apartment accommodations, the Alpine Springs and Spa development offering world class ice skating facilities and relaxing hot pools, and the development of café facilities atop Mount John that is home to the University of Canterbury astronomical observatory facilities. Earth & Sky offers ‘dusk to dark’ star watching tours, and in winter, the Roundhill Ski Field which this season has again developed additional facilities, attracts international Olympic ski teams from the USA, Japan and Europe to train during their summer, New Zealand’s winter months.

Many beautiful upmarket holiday and permanent homes have also been built in the past few years in response to Lake Tekapo’s perceived growth potential and new homes are still being built every day. A large number of these homes are available for visitor accommodation.

Visitors and locals alike also enjoy the variety of shops stocking uniquely beautiful New Zealand merino wool garments and souvenirs and the variety of restaurant facilities offered in a ‘village’ ambience. Developments signaled for the town in the near future include:
  • Redevelopment of the village centre for more shops and restaurants
  • Regional Park for mountain biking, walking and picnicking
  • New community centre with conference centre, squash courts, tennis courts and gymnasium.
  • “The Cairns” residential development which includes a new 18 hole golf course

Also there is world class fishing, hunting, horse trekking, boat excursions, walking tracks and a nicely groomed 9 hole country golf course with breathtaking views to the mountains, and amazing photo opportunities including the most photographed tiny stone ‘Church of the Good Shepherd’ on the lake shore, it being one of New Zealand’s most iconic attractions. The Mount Cook National park is a comfortable one and a half hours drive, Mount Cook being new Zealand’s number one icon.

Lake Tekapo boats the highest number of clear night skies in the Southern hemisphere and in the top 3 towns for the highest number of sunshine hours per year. Temperatures range between 25-33 degrees celsuis in the height of the sunny, dry summer and average minus 5 degrees during the frosty winter mornings which are inevitably followed by bright sunny days and temperatures of between 7-10 degrees. Light snowfalls in winter dress the village from time to time adding to its enchanting scenic beauty.
